Allow yourself to stop and find stillness
I have noticed that we all tend to feel guilty when we allow ourselves just to be without doing much. We accept that a day or two can pass by without doing anything, but when it becomes a week, two weeks, month, or months - or when we cannot control the timing when we are forced to be, we all start to struggle. We want to do something. Anything. So, we pick up all the projects we have procrastinated about for a long time already, we organize the house, we book an extra spinning class, we read the book we got as a present five years ago, we start to train for a marathon, that we never really wanted to do... Sounds familiar?
Busyness has become a trendy word. Think about what you usually answer when someone asks, “how are you”? You might say back, “I am well, thank you… I have been really busy”. At least I used to say that, every time. The word ‘busy’ just appeared from somewhere into that sentence – even if I was not even busy! I said it because it became a habit, and I felt somewhat a better person to show that I was busy and had lots of things going on in my life. It was feeding my ego. It made me feel more important.
Sometimes we can be busy. For example, when we take care of kids, run our own company, or run our day to day errands. But the word ‘busy’ is also an escape route to many – like it was for me. For a long time, I did not want to be in stillness, especially when I did not choose it myself. Years back, it was a struggle not to do anything on Friday evening after work. I called all my friends to see if anyone was available. I booked a sports class for the evening, just to avoid the forced stillness. Living in the busy autopilot world, was so much easier. I wanted to escape and also to choose when to face the thoughts and emotions that I need to face. But then I realized what it all meant and started to pay attention to when and how I used this ‘busy’ word.
My beautiful soul, I fully realized that in that state of just being (without doing), our consciousness raises. Isn’t that what we all really want?
When we allow ourselves to be, we create space within to face the thoughts, that we have pushed back while we have been busy. From this space, we find clarity, heal the past, forgive, and see things from a new perspective. All of these steps are a part of raising consciousness and reaching for a new mindset of love, openness, harmony, and peace.
So next time, when you struggle with not doing much, it might help you to understand that it actually is the best gift you are giving yourself that day, or month.
